WRITING: THINKING MADE VISIBLE
College-Preparatory Writing and Analytical Development
The transition from high school to college writing is one of the most significant academic shifts students face, but most students are not introduced to the expectations of college-level writing until they arrive. As a former first-semester college composition instructor, I observed that very few incoming students have the level of intellectual organization, focus, reasoning, and control of language required to succeed with confidence in their writing.
As a result, much of the first year becomes a period of catch-up. When writing is not yet at the college level, the composition course will not suffer alone; performance across subjects is affected—often resulting in a lower GPA during the first year.
My work addresses this transition directly by preparing for freshman composition before they arrive, so they are able to write with clarity, structure, and confidence from the outset.
Academic Writing Development
College writing assumes that students are able to:
- develop and sustain an argument
- structure ideas with clarity and intention
- engage meaningfully with sources
- anticipate and guide the reader
- revise for precision
- complete papers of a comprehensive depth and length much different from their high school assignments
Students learn to improve their thinking through multiple drafts, strengthening clarity, organization, and argument, with the goal of being able to approach any paper with confidence.
This work is particularly valuable in the months leading up to college, when students have the time and space to strengthen their writing before the demands of the semester begin.
Literary Analysis
For literature students, I provide guidance in:
- close reading
- identifying meaningful patterns and themes
- developing original interpretations
- supporting ideas with textual evidence
Students move beyond summary into clear, well-supported analysis.
Individualized Instruction
All sessions are one-on-one, allowing for precise diagnosis, targeted instruction, and steady progress for:
- Seniors preparing for college
- Rising high school students
- Dual enrollment students
- Homeschool students transitioning to formal writing
- College students seeking stronger structure
Initial Session (Diagnostic): A focused session to assess writing structure, clarity of thought, and analytical ability. A clear plan follows.
Ongoing Sessions: Regular sessions build consistency, skill retention, and independence.
Intensive Support: Short-term, focused support for major papers and advanced coursework.
Many students have access to writing centers. These help with individual assignments and are often staffed with peer tutors. My work focuses on the underlying skills: how to think, organize, and write independently.
Sessions are available in person in the East Tucson/Tanque Verde area, or online for students locally and in other locations.
I am also available to collaborate with college counselors to support students during the transition to college-level writing.
Rates are tailored to the level and goals of each student. Details are available upon request.
